Give Thanks: Family

This past weekend the hubs and I traveled north to visit his parents. Along the way we stopped and took Grandma to lunch and visited with some aunts, uncles and cousins. Every time I’m with my husband’s family I am able to learn more about him. That does not mean that every story is about him or that every photo is a naked kid in the tub or something like that. In hearing stories about his family, I learn more about what it means to be a part of his family in the present.

We had intended to celebrate Grandma’s recent birthday during our visit, and the day we went to lunch would have been her 61st wedding anniversary. I could not help myself and asked if they had a big wedding or small, because I knew her husband had been a military man. That started a whole conversation about the wedding, photo albums, how they had both been engaged to other people, and about how much they loved each other.

We had not planned to talk about all that but I am so thankful for that time with her. She has been so welcoming and gracious to me as a granddaughter-in-law.
